Video8 was introduced in the 1980's as an alternative to VHS tapes & Beta Max. Although these new tapes did not produce higher resolution videos, the equipment was lighter & smaller.
In the late 1980's Hi8 video tapes were introduced offering a higher resolution of 420 lines.
Digital8 video tapes were introduced in 1999 using technology from 8 mm Video Tapes and Hi8 Video Tapes. All three types of tapes use the same unit to record & play. One of the main differences between Digital8 & Hi8 & 8 mm video tapes is that the Digital8 is encoded digitally rather than analog.
Digital8 is considered to produce the same quality video as a MiniDV tape.
Like all video tapes, long term video storage on Video8 tapes risks loss and quality degradation. Luckily you can transfer your Hi8, 8mm & Digital8 video tapes to DVD or Digital Video file.
