Today, over 95% of the film transfer companies use a real-time transfer process. Which means the film is captured at the same speed you would normally run it if using a projector. There are also several ways to perform a real-time transfer. Some shoot the film on screen and record it with a camcorder. Some use mirrors and a camera. Some transfer the film to VHS first using equipment from the 1970's/1980's and then transfer that to DVD. A real-time transfer will result in video that has lost about 20-50% of the quality from the film.

A frame by frame process slows the speed of the film down significantly and captures each frame separately. It's like scanning or taking a digital picture of each frame. A frame by frame process will result in video that is an exact duplication of the film without any loss in quality.

Example Pictures

Real-Time vs. Frame by Frame

Real-Time Process (Bronze)

Our
Bronze will result in a video that is a decent representation of the film. Because this is a digital transfer, the quality loss from the film is about 20-30%. An analogue transfer looses about 40-50% of the quality which is what most film transfer companies use.

Frame By Frame Process (Silver)

Our Silver process results in an exact duplication of the film (no loss in quality) because of the frame by frame capture.  The results are noticeably better than the real-time Bronze process. The picture is sharper and has less grain.

Frame By Frame with Restoration (Gold)

Our Gold process includes a frame by frame color correction, exposure enhancement and removal of the majority of grain and scratches. Currently, no one offers anything like our Gold process. You can see that the majority of the grain and scratches are no longer there and the colors have been corrected which results in better quality than the original film in this case*.

High Definition Frame By Frame with Restoration (Platinum HD)

The Platinum HD process is the first High Definition film transfer service of it's kind in the United States.  You can see the grain improvements in the magnified area over the Gold process. Also, if you look at the facial tones, you can see the the secondary color correction did a better job of getting the right color balance.

*Quality of restoration is dependent upon condition of existing film stock; severely deteriorated original materials may be beyond the reach of even the most sophisticated restoration methods. Click here for more information. Refunds are only given if a competitor can obtain better quality (defined by clarity, color, graininess and scratches) for a similar price (within 10% of ours). Under these fair terms, we've never had to give a refund.
